Glucosamine, often taken in conjunction with chondroitin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), is an over-the-counter supplement used to relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis. Some patients report temporary improvement after taking the supplement, however, there is no evidence that its use resolves joint inflammationThe complex biological response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli such as pathogens or damaged cells. It is a protective attempt by the organism to remove the injurious stimuli as well as initiate the healing process for the tissue..
Worse, there is the distinct possibility that the supplement actually inhibits progress, and, for this reason, Marshall ProtocolA curative medical treatment for chronic inflammatory disease. Based on the Marshall Pathogenesis. patients must avoid using it. According to an article by Prof. Robert W. Bradford and Henry W. Allen in the Townsend Letter:
An effort to determine which carbohydrates Borrelia burgdorferi consumes revealed that the organism utilizes the monosaccharides glucose, mannose and N-acetylglucosamine, as well as the disaccharides maltose and chitobiose. A popular treatment for arthritis includes the administration of chondroitin sulfate and N-acetylglucosamine. If the arthritis is Lyme-induced, N-acetylglucosamine is contraindicated.
MSM seems to work by promoting oxidation of infected cells. The increase in inflammation from its use may be dangerous when combined with immunopathologyA temporary increase in disease symptoms experienced by Marshall Protocol patients that results from the release of cytokines and endotoxins as disease-causing bacteria are killed. from the Marshall Protocol, and is therefore contraindicated – with or without with glucosamine and chondroitin.
Just a word of caution about sulfur supplements, MSM in particular. You may just end up “feeding” certain bacteria in the process. From my own personal experience with MSM supplementation prior to starting the MP and what I now know about some bacteria’s ability to reduce sulfur to hydrogen sulfide , I would not recommend MSM.
Shortly after I discontinued MSM , when I started the MP, I experienced what I believe was a certain degree of hydrogen sulfide toxicity as my body released excess sulfur (probably through the die-off of bacteria dependent on sulfur or simply an excess of sulfur). I could not wear metallic jewelry (copper, gold or silver) without my skin turning black for over a year, one sign of hydrogen sulfide toxicity.
Not to mention the fatigue, headaches, cough, brain fogThe loss of intellectual functions such as reasoning; memory loss; and other neurological abilities that is severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. I experienced while on MSM. IMHO, the potential for ill-effects with MSM supplementation far outweigh the benefits of reduction of joint pain (palliation)
